Learn More About Botox®

Botox® is the brand name of a botulinum toxin injection that’s FDA-approved to treat lines and wrinkles. Neurotoxins like Botox® temporarily paralyze muscles and prevent them from contracting. When strategically injected into the face, this can smooth out dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle contractions when you frown or smile. Younger patients often use Botox® as a preventative measure to slow down the formation of these dynamic wrinkles.

Other popular botulinum toxin neuromodulators include Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau®, and Daxxify®.  Although several areas on the face and neck respond well to neuromodulators, these treatments work best on frown and forehead lines, fine lines around the eyes (crow’s feet), and the neck to lift and soften banding.

In addition to neuromodulators, another popular injectable treatment is dermal fillers. These volume-enhancing fillers can smooth out wrinkles and restore youthful fullness to the face. Botox® treatments paired with a dermal filler like Restylane® or Juvederm® can help optimize your rejuvenating results.

Types of Neuromodulators 

Botox® and other popular neuromodulators are very similar but have a few differences. Some formulas work better for certain treatment areas than others. One of our dermatologists at Capital Laser & Skin Care can help determine which option is best for you. 

For example, Dysport® spreads faster and may be more effective for larger areas, like the forehead. Xeomin® is considered to be a more natural neuromodulator since it doesn’t have stabilizing proteins and may be effective for patients who are no longer seeing ideal results with Botox®. 

Jeuveau® is the newest of these neurotoxins and was FDA-approved in 2019. It is the only one meant exclusively for aesthetic uses, whereas the other formulas like Botox® are also sometimes used for medical conditions such as muscle spasms and hyperhidrosis.

Daxxify® is another new member of the neurotoxin family. It is used in the same way as Botox® and Dysport® to treat lines and wrinkles. It uses a unique peptide to escort it to the targeted nerves, making it an ideal option for some people who do not respond to or have had a reaction to other neurotoxins.

One of the benefits of botulinum injections like Botox® is their convenience. Depending on the size of your treatment area, the procedure typically takes 10-15 minutes. One of our dermatologists will make several strategic injections based on your unique treatment plan.

Through careful technique, we minimize bruising so that you can get back to your day with minimal disruption. If bruising does occur, our patients receive complimentary laser treatment to minimize its appearance. At Capital Laser & Skin Care, your results and satisfaction are our priority.

When administering neuromodulator treatments such as Botox®, it takes a completely personalized approach and skilled hand to achieve beautifully balanced results without an overdone or unnatural appearance. All injectable treatments are performed by our board-certified dermatologists, and we take time with each patient to develop a customized plan that will help maintain a naturally vibrant look for years to come.

Most people see the results of their Botox® treatment within a couple of days. Depending on your personalized treatment, you can expect reduced lines and wrinkles and a smoother, more youthful complexion. These results typically last around four months, and you can get repeat treatments to maintain your rejuvenated appearance. Many patients find that with repeated treatments, their results last longer.

As a minimally invasive procedure, Botox® treatments don’t require any downtime. Mild bruising or swelling at the injection sites may occur, but we are careful to minimize these side effects. Though you can return to your regular routine immediately, you should avoid strenuous activities for 24 hours after treatment. 

It’s also important to avoid rubbing or massaging your face during this time. Pressure on the treatment area could cause the Botox® to move, disrupting your results. The results and recovery of Xeomin®, Dysport®, or Jeuveau® will likely be similar to Botox®, and your provider will explain what to expect during your consultation.
