PRP Hair Regrowth Therapy

Up to 50% of people will experience hereditary hair loss. Many others struggle with thinning hair due to illness, medication, or health conditions. For many, at-home treatments won’t be enough to stop or reverse hair loss. Fortunately, surgical transplants are not the only effective solution for this common concern. PRP injections are an innovative, naturally derived treatment to promote hair growth.

Learn More About PRP Hair Regrowth Therapy

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) harnesses the power of the body’s natural restorative potential to add fullness and volume to thinning hair. Platelets in the blood contain growth factors that can energize cellular activity within the hair follicle to promote thicker, healthier-looking hair. Platelet-rich plasma is created individually from each patient after a simple blood draw; therefore, the risk of allergy or side effects is minimal.

In recent years, PRP has gained popularity for several cosmetic uses. Its healing and regenerative properties give it versatile benefits for skin, hair, and other tissues. PRP is a uniquely convenient and natural treatment for hair loss that still offers excellent results.

Since PRP is made from your blood, the first step of the procedure is a simple blood draw. The blood sample will be similar to the amount you would have drawn for routine lab work. We will then place the blood in a centrifuge, which spins it rapidly to isolate the platelet-rich plasma. Once the PRP injections are ready, your provider will make several small injections in the areas of hair loss. We may apply a topical numbing cream to your scalp beforehand if needed.

The entire PRP injection process is fast and simple. You can expect your appointment to take approximately one hour. Thanks to the small injections, most people experience little discomfort even without numbing cream.

PRP therapy is best performed in a series of treatments. The number of treatments you’ll need will depend on the severity of hair loss, but most patients see optimal results with three or four monthly sessions. You’ll likely notice improvements in the second or third month. Full results from PRP develop gradually over several months as your hair grows.

Our board-certified dermatologists typically recommend a comprehensive approach to hair restoration, combining PRP injections with oral supplements and topical treatments, depending on the patient’s unique condition and needs. During a detailed consultation, they will discuss this with you to evaluate your hair and create a personalized treatment plan.

PRP hair restoration can encourage a healthy scalp and growth, but it won’t necessarily cure the actual cause of your hair loss, and its effects are temporary. Patients generally need ongoing maintenance therapy for long-lasting results. After your initial treatment series, we may recommend maintenance injections every four to six months.

Since PRP is derived from your own blood, it rarely has any side effects. The injections themselves may cause minor swelling or bruising that subsides in a few days. If you experience discomfort or tenderness at the injection sites, a cold compress or Tylenol may help. PRP treatments don’t require any downtime. You can resume your usual activities immediately, though we may recommend avoiding heat or pressure on your scalp for a couple of days.

PRP injections are a safe, beneficial option for almost anyone. However, PRP may not be effective for certain causes of hair loss or for severe cases. One of our board-certified dermatologists will evaluate your hair and help you determine the best treatment option, which may involve additional methods like supplements or prescription minoxidil. Certain medications or medical conditions may affect your eligibility for PRP therapy.
