Rosacea

Everyone wishes for healthy skin and a clear complexion. Unfortunately, many conditions can prevent it, and rosacea is one of these. Affecting an estimated 14 million Americans, rosacea is a common skin condition that often goes unrecognized and untreated.

At Capital Laser & Skin Care, we want to help you achieve that clear complexion and like what you see in the mirror. If you’re concerned about rosacea, our dermatologists can assess your skin and create a treatment plan for your skin goals.

Learn More About Rosacea

Rosacea is a common inflammatory skin condition that causes blotchy red areas on the face. It most commonly occurs on the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin but can also appear on the chest, neck, ears, and scalp. These areas of redness often consist of broken capillaries and small, red bumps that may be confused as a rash or acne

The most common symptoms of rosacea are:

  • Facial redness and frequent blushing
  • Red bumps and pus-filled pimples
  • Visible veins
  • Skin thickening

Other potential signs and symptoms of rosacea are burning or stinging sensations, swelling, eye irritation, plaques, and dryness. The appearance and symptoms of rosacea can vary greatly among patients.

Rosacea is a progressive skin condition that is expected to worsen over time without treatment. Facial skin can become more red and coarse with enlarged pores and new pimple-like bumps. Fortunately for those who struggle with rosacea, there are effective treatments available to stop the progression and restore a smooth, more even-toned complexion.

The exact cause of rosacea remains unknown, but several factors may contribute to your risk of developing it. Rosacea is most common in Caucasian women over the age of 30 but is often most severe in men. Other common risk factors include smoking, having fair skin that is prone to burning, and genetics since rosacea sometimes runs in families.

For people with rosacea, the condition is often characterized by flare-ups that come and go. Part of effectively managing rosacea is tracking what triggers these flare-ups. Common triggers include:

  • Hot drinks, spicy foods, and some alcoholic beverages
  • Temperature extremes and sun or wind exposure
  • Emotional stress
  • Certain medications
  • Intense exercise
  • Some cosmetic and skincare products

While prescription-strength creams can be prescribed for breakouts from rosacea, the most effective way to reduce the redness is with laser and light-based vascular treatments. Capital Laser & Skin Care has the most advanced vascular-specific devices, which can significantly improve the appearance of rosacea with little to no downtime.

During rosacea treatment consultation at our state-of-the-art Chevy Chase skin care center, our board-certified dermatologists carefully evaluate your skin to determine the best solution for treating your rosacea. Depending on individual needs, prescription rosacea medications can be combined with laser treatments and our exclusive products for rosacea-prone skin for long-lasting results.

We offer the following laser treatments for rosacea.

Vbeam Perfecta®

This pulsed dye laser targets damaged blood vessels and capillaries to reduce redness. Our dermatologists use Vbeam Perfecta® as the most advanced pulsed dye laser technology available. The Vbeam Perfecta® laser involves little downtime and minimal side effects, and patients typically require three to five treatments to reduce rosacea.

Forever Young BBL™

Using BroadBand Light technology, the Forever Young BBL™ laser is designed to improve skin tone and may be used to treat rosacea, acne, hyperpigmentation, spider veins, and more. This intense pulsed light therapy also stimulates collagen to rejuvenate the skin and slow down aging. BBL™ treatments are quick and convenient with little to no downtime, but you may need multiple sessions and maintenance treatments to manage rosacea.

DermaV™

Using patented IntelliTone™ technology, DermaV™ targets redness, visible veins, and unwanted pigmentation. This advanced, non-invasive system uses customizable wavelengths to precisely address a range of concerns. Most people will see results after a single treatment, although some conditions may require a few sessions. Any minor swelling or redness after treatment can be covered with makeup and will face quickly.
