Large Pores

Some fortunate people leave large, visible pores behind with their oily teenage skin. However, many of us still struggle with noticeable pores, which can worsen with age. Large pores are an extremely common problem that affects individuals of all ages. While some people can manage them with at-home methods, others will benefit from more effective treatments.

If you’re looking for a way to achieve tighter, less visible pores, your board-certified dermatologists at Capital Laser & Skin Care can help. Our range of treatments can be customized to your skin and the underlying causes of your problem for smooth, even-toned results.

Learn More About Large Pores

Pores are openings in the skin that release substances like oil or sweat. Every hair on your body is accompanied by a gland that secretes an oil called sebum. This oil helps keep the skin soft and flexible, but when overproduced, it can make your skin look oily and cause acne.

Enlarged pores may look like small pits in your skin. They can also become filled with oil and dead skin cells, leading to whiteheads or blackheads. You may notice that your skin looks uneven or oily, especially around your nose and other problem areas.

Pores do not actually grow or shrink, but you can change how visible they are. The walls of the pore can become looser over time, making it more visible. Treatment can noticeably reduce the appearance of these pores to restore your confidence.

Several factors can contribute to large pores. If your pores have always looked large, this issue may be inherited. Other causes of enlarged pores include:

  • Over-production of sebum
  • Sun damage
  • Age-related collagen loss
  • Loss of elasticity around the pores

Age-related changes to your skin can make your pores look larger over time. As your skin produces less collagen and elastin, the skin around your pores becomes less firm. As a result, they become more visible. Treating large pores requires diagnosing the underlying causes and choosing a treatment that will address them most effectively.

Capital Laser & Skin Care’s board-certified dermatologists can recommend several at-home strategies that may help make your pores look smaller. These include targeted skincare products, a cleansing schedule that does not over-wash or under-wash your skin, and other techniques. However, these techniques are usually less effective against large pores caused by aging and sun damage.

Our range of treatments can address different causes of large pores to help you achieve the results you want to see. Your consultation at our Chevy Chase skin care center will allow us to assess your skin and determine the best treatment for you.

Chemical Peel

Chemical peels offer a versatile way to address large pores and many other skin concerns. They contain compounds such as salicylic, glycolic, and trichloroacetic acids that exfoliate the dull, damaged outer layers of skin. Chemical peels can be used as a regular part of your skincare routine to keep your pores clear of oil, dead skin cells, and debris.

Clear + Brilliant®

If you are experiencing large pores and other early signs of aging, your dermatologist might recommend Clear + Brilliant®. This treatment uses non-invasive laser energy to trigger increased collagen development. It also smooths and firms your skin’s surface so it looks clearer and pores look tighter.

HALO® Hybrid Fractional Laser

The multipurpose Halo™ is a fractional laser that can address large pores caused by aging and collagen loss. It uses two wavelengths to target different layers of the skin, promoting more collagen production. It uses ablative and non-ablative technologies to provide more intensive results and noticeably smaller pores.

DiamondGlow®

DiamondGlow™ is a rejuvenating, skin-brightening treatment that gives skin a clear, healthy glow. It is suitable for all skin types and effectively clears and shrinks pores.
