What Is the Best Treatment for Stretch Marks?

June 20, 2026

Stretch marks are a common skin concern that can appear on the stomach, thighs, arms, or other areas after pregnancy, growth spurts, or changes in weight. While they are harmless, many people find them frustrating because they rarely fade completely on their own.

Advanced treatments now make it possible to significantly improve the appearance of stretch marks, smoothing the skin and evening out tone.

What are Stretch Marks?

Stretch marks, or striae, develop when the skin stretches rapidly, causing tears in the underlying collagen and elastin fibers. They often begin as red, purple, or dark lines and gradually fade to a lighter, silvery color over time.

Common causes include:

  • Pregnancy or postpartum changes
  • Rapid weight gain or loss
  • Growth spurts during adolescence
  • Hormonal fluctuations

While stretch marks are not harmful, they can affect confidence. Topical creams alone usually provide minimal improvement because they cannot reach the deeper layers of the skin where collagen remodeling is needed.

Professional treatments target both surface texture and structural skin support to make a visible difference.

What is the Best Treatment for Stretch Marks?

The most effective treatments stimulate collagen and elastin production at multiple layers of the skin. At Capital Laser and Skin Care, we offer several advanced options:

  • RF Microneedling – Combines micro-needles with radiofrequency energy to trigger deep collagen remodeling. It helps:
    • Reduce the depth and visibility of stretch marks
    • Improve skin texture and firmness
    • Promote natural regeneration for smoother skin
  • HALO® Laser – A hybrid fractional laser that treats both surface and deeper skin layers. It resurfaces the skin while stimulating new collagen formation, helping stretch marks blend more seamlessly with surrounding skin.
  • Fraxel® Laser – A fractional resurfacing laser that improves tone and texture while softening older stretch marks.

Treatment plans can be customized based on the severity, location, and age of your stretch marks. In many cases, combining these therapies can deliver the best results for both color and texture improvement.

Will My Stretch Marks Be Gone Permanently?

While no treatment can completely erase stretch marks, RF microneedling and laser therapies can dramatically reduce their appearance. Treated skin becomes smoother, firmer, and more even in tone.

Results are influenced by:

  • Skin type and elasticity
  • Age and severity of the stretch marks
  • Consistency of treatments and follow-up care

Maintaining improvements is supported by proper skincare, sun protection, and healthy lifestyle habits. These steps ensure your results last and continue to improve over time.

Is There Any Downtime After These Treatments?

Downtime depends on the procedure and intensity:

  • RF Microneedling – Typically causes mild redness or swelling for up to two days. Makeup can often be worn soon after.
  • HALO® and Fraxel® Lasers – May cause redness, slight peeling, or sensitivity for several days. Most patients can return to normal activities within a day or two.

Post-treatment care is essential for optimal results, including gentle cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. Following instructions closely helps skin heal evenly and reduces the risk of irritation or pigment changes.

How Many Treatments Will I Need?

Stretch marks improve gradually as collagen and elastin rebuild. Most patients see the best results after a series of treatments:

  • RF Microneedling – Typically 3–5 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart
  • HALO® or Fraxel® Laser – Usually 2–4 sessions, depending on the depth and age of the stretch marks

Your provider will design a personalized plan based on your skin and goals. Over time, these treatments can significantly improve the appearance of stretch marks, leaving skin smoother, firmer, and more even.

I had such an amazing experience. The office and patient rooms are so clean. Yet so comfortable. From the moment I walked in I was greeted with friendliness. Dr Tanzi is so kind. She really listened to me and took her time assessing my needs and working through a care plan with me. She explained the risks and benefits of everything in a way that was easy to understand. The staff was caring and attentive. The procedures were performed with care and attention to detail. Dr Tanzi and the staff made sure I was comfortable afterwards – even provided me with snacks! Discharge instructions were reviewed with me and easy to follow. I’m feeling great. I can’t say enough how wonderful I was treated – how professional everyone was – yet how comfortable I was. Can’t recommend this place enough.
