RF Microneedling vs. Traditional Microneedling: What’s the Difference and Why It Matters
Microneedling has become a trusted treatment for smoothing skin texture and reducing signs of aging. With advancements like RF microneedling, options for rejuvenating your skin have expanded even further.
At Capital Laser & Skin Care, we use Genius RF microneedling to offer deeper, more targeted results than traditional microneedling alone.
What is RF Microneedling?
RF microneedling combines two technologies: microneedling and radiofrequency (RF) energy. Using a specialized device like Genius RF, very fine needles create controlled micro-injuries in the skin. At the same time, the device delivers RF energy deep into the dermis, gently heating tissues below the surface.
This combination triggers collagen and elastin production in two ways: the physical stimulation from the needles and the heat from the RF energy. The result is firmer, smoother, and more evenly toned skin over time.

RF Microneedling vs. Traditional Microneedling: What’s the Difference
Traditional microneedling uses tiny needles to create microchannels in the skin, stimulating the body’s natural healing process and collagen production.
While effective for surface-level improvements like mild texture issues and fine lines, its impact is limited to more superficial layers of the skin.
RF microneedling, such as with Genius RF, goes further. It delivers RF energy directly into deeper layers of the skin through the microneedles. This targeted heat promotes stronger collagen remodeling and even mild skin tightening.
Unlike traditional microneedling, RF microneedling can treat both superficial and deeper skin concerns, providing more noticeable and longer-lasting results.
Another important difference is precision. Devices like Genius RF allow our team to adjust the depth and intensity of treatment based on your unique needs, making it highly customizable and safe for various skin types and concerns.
What Does RF Microneedling Treat?
RF microneedling is especially versatile and can address a wide range of skin concerns, including:
- Acne scars, by breaking up scar tissue and encouraging collagen production
- Fine lines and wrinkles, through deep collagen remodeling and skin tightening
- Enlarged pores, by strengthening the surrounding skin structure
- Mild skin laxity, with the heat from RF energy stimulating tightening effects
- Uneven skin tone and texture, by promoting healthier, renewed skin cells
By working below the surface, Genius® RF microneedling treats deeper structural concerns as well as visible surface imperfections, giving skin a smoother and firmer appearance.

Is There Any Downtime After RF Microneedling?
While RF microneedling is more intensive than traditional microneedling, downtime remains minimal. After treatment, most people experience temporary redness, mild swelling, and a warm sensation similar to a sunburn. These effects usually subside within a few days.
Pinpoint scabbing or flaking may occur as the skin begins to heal, but this typically resolves quickly. Most people feel comfortable returning to work and daily routines within 24 to 48 hours. For best results, it’s important to protect treated skin by using gentle skincare products and avoiding sun exposure during the healing phase.
How Long Do RF Microneedling Results Last?
RF microneedling results appear gradually as new collagen and elastin build up in the skin. Many people notice improvements in texture, firmness, and scar depth within a few weeks, with optimal results developing over two to three months.
The benefits of increased collagen production can last up to a year or longer, depending on your skin type, age, and lifestyle. To maintain smoother, firmer skin, many choose to schedule maintenance treatments once or twice a year.
Traditional microneedling can also offer visible improvements, but the results tend to fade sooner because it doesn’t target deeper layers of skin in the same way. RF microneedling creates more dramatic and longer-lasting changes by remodeling skin structure from within.
