Chemical Peel vs. Laser Resurfacing: Which One Gives You Better Results?
When it comes to smoothing skin texture, evening out tone, and minimizing signs of aging or sun damage, both chemical peels and laser resurfacing are highly effective. These treatments work in different ways but share the same goal: revealing fresher, healthier-looking skin.
At Capital Laser & Skin Care in Chevy Chase, MD, we offer a full range of skin renewal treatments, including medical-grade peels and state-of-the-art laser technology.
How Do Chemical Peels and Laser Resurfacing Work?
Chemical peels use specially formulated acids to exfoliate the skin. The solution is applied topically and penetrates to a controlled depth, removing dead and damaged skin cells.
A chemical peel encourages new cell turnover, revealing smoother, more radiant skin underneath. Peels range in strength from superficial to medium-depth.
Laser resurfacing uses focused energy to target the deeper layers of the skin. Lasers like Fraxel® Dual, Halo™, and Clear + Brilliant® create micro-channels or deliver heat below the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen production and accelerate skin renewal.
Some lasers are non-ablative (treating tissue without removing it), while others are fractional and ablative, removing layers of skin for deeper resurfacing.
Both treatments help reduce:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Uneven tone or pigmentation
- Acne scars or other textural concerns
- Sun damage and dullness

Chemical Peel vs. Laser Resurfacing: Which One Gives You Better Results?
The right treatment depends on your skin goals, type, and how dramatic a change you’re seeking.
Chemical peels are best for improving surface-level issues such as minor pigmentation, fine lines, and mild acne scars. They’re often recommended for people with sensitive skin or those who prefer a gentler approach to skin renewal. Results can be subtle to moderate, depending on the depth of the peel.
Laser resurfacing, particularly with devices like Fraxel® Dual or Halo™, may deliver more dramatic and longer-lasting improvements. Lasers can penetrate deeper than peels and are often the choice for moderate to severe sun damage, deeper wrinkles, and more stubborn texture concerns.
In general, lasers offer more precise control over treatment depth and customization, leading to more noticeable rejuvenation, but they also tend to be more of an investment in terms of cost and downtime.
Which Has More Downtime: Chemical Peels or Laser Resurfacing?
Downtime varies widely depending on the strength and type of treatment.
- Light chemical peels may cause only mild redness and flaking for a few days.
- Medium-depth peels can result in more noticeable peeling and require about 5 to 7 days of recovery.
Laser resurfacing downtime depends on the device used:
- Clear + Brilliant®: Mild redness for 1–2 days with little to no visible peeling.
- Fraxel® Dual and Halo™: Expect several days of redness, swelling, and peeling, typically 5 to 7 days for most people.
If you’re looking for minimal recovery and a subtle refresh, a light peel or gentle laser might be ideal. For more significant changes and long-term results, fractional laser resurfacing is worth the brief recovery time.

How Many Chemical Peels or Laser Treatments Will I Need?
Both treatments work best in a series, especially for long-term results.
- Chemical peels typically require 3 to 6 sessions spaced a few weeks apart, depending on the type and depth of peel.
- Laser treatments like Clear + Brilliant® may also require 3 to 6 sessions for best results, while deeper treatments like Fraxel® Dual or Halo™ often yield visible results after just 1 to 2 sessions, with optional maintenance treatments throughout the year.
