Hair Thinning

Hereditary-pattern hair loss is the most common cause of hair loss. It is not a disease, but a natural condition caused by some combination of genetics, hormone levels, and the aging process.  Although commonly thought of as a problem mostly in men, it is more common in women than you may think. In fact, more than 1 in 4 women will experience hereditary hair thinning.

There are several non-surgical steps you can stake to slow down the process and reactivate dormant hair follicles which results in thicker, more beautiful hair. Not everyone will respond to a single type of treatment, therefore a combination approach to thinning hair is often recommended. Since hereditary-pattern hair loss is an ongoing process, maintenance of therapy is required to sustain results.

Minoxidil (Rogaine) has been clinically proven to reinvigorate thinning hair follicles.  When used daily, this over-the-counter topical formulation can help prevent miniaturization of the hair follicles. Penetration into the scalp can be improved with a prescription-strength formula that combines 5% minoxidil with tretinoin (Retin A). This custom formulation is available to patients of Capital Laser & Skin Care. Results are usually noticed within 3-6 months.

Hair Supplements Although once thought to deliver questionable results, today’s most advanced hair supplements have clinically tested ingredients to combat the underlying causes of thinning hair. Taken daily, less hair shedding is typically seen after 2-3 months.  However, not all hair supplements are the same and some contain fish-derived proteins so be sure to discuss recommendations and allergies with your dermatologist.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) harnesses the power of the body’s natural restorative potential to add fullness and volume to thinning hair. Platelets in the blood contain growth factors that can energize cellular activity within the hair follicle to promote the proliferation of thicker, healthier-looking hair. Best performed in a series of treatments, results from PRP injections are typically noticed in 2-3 months.
